This week i paint again a flower i’ve never painted before : columbines It’s quite a complicated flower but so beautiful ! Even the leaves are super cute, but i’ll focused on the flower here !
Before starting my painting, i like to make a quick try with gouache. It helps me with composition, colors, shapes… But lately i also draw some quick sketches with watercolor markers. And even with a really limited amount of colors (here : blue, magenta, yellow and green), i get a pretty good idea of the composition i want.
On this watercolor painting i focused myself on shapes and mark making with my brushes. I challenge myself with more difficulties : using just flat brushes and no voluntary gradient. Why ? Just because i want to push myself towards a more expressive painting with not much details and much more energy. I want a focus on shape, color masses and transparency. It’s really the perfect exercise when learning to paint loosely.

Colors : Ultramarine blue (Sennelier), Amazonite genuine (Daniel Smith), Nickel azo yellow (Daniel Smith), Aussie red gold (Daniel Smith), Wisteria (Daniel Smith), Rose madder lake (Sennelier).
