Even if it’a the end of summer i wanted to propose you a beach painting like i do every year. This time i wanted to paint a beach in Blanes, Costa Brava, Spain.
For this theme i wanted to find a balance between a very still and light sky and a busy foreground with rocks and sea. I’m mostly looking for a sky that don’t overpower the rest of the painting. So i painted it in quite a minimalistic way : one wash for the blue, carving out some clouds and one wash for a very simple shadow on the cloud. And that’s it ! I think that is the quickest sky i have ever painted, but it works beautifully.
Rocks on the other hand require a bit more work. But by planing and painting them step by step it’s not so difficult. First a wash with the right colors and some idea of shadows. But as it is the first wash in this area, everything went wet very quick and the colors blend smoothly. In a second wash i can finally get to details, get more depth and add texture.

Brushes: Escoda Último 1″, Princeton Neptune 1/2″, Silver Brush Black Velvet 1/4″ dagger shape.
Paper : Arches rough.
Colors : Indanthrene blue (Sennelier), Manganese blue hue (Daniel Smith), Amazonite genuine(Daniel Smith), Yellow ochre (Daniel Smith), Burnt sienna (Daniel Smith). Opaque white (Schmincke).
